Fluoride in foods - EU Community law
<<< Back to main page
Dear Commissioner Byrne,
The EU has recently published new labelling reference values (labelling RDAs) for vitamins and minerals which include recommendations for a daily intake of fluoride.
You might be aware that fluoride is toxic and that its use in foods has been prohibited recently in Belgium.
You also might know, that several countries have cancelled their water fluoridation programs and that the incidence of dental caries after stopping water fluoridation actually went down.
This is a serious issue for the EU and insistence on including fluorides as food ingredients might bring major discredit to the EU Food Authority, as people realize that they are actually swallowing poison, thinly disguised as being "good for your teeth".
Attached are comments by Mr. Rudolf Ziegelbecker, sent to the Codex Committee on Foods for Special Dietary Uses, which would just as well apply to the EU.
Maybe the Commission should initiate a major review to look, just like Ziegelbecker did, at the reliability of the original studies and at the failures of various fluoridation programmes around the world and in many of the member nations.
Kind regards
Josef Hasslberger
