Jack Layton-firings by Health Canada

Dear Friend:

Thank you for writing about the firing of Shiv Chopra, Margaret Hayden, and Gerard Lambert by Health Canada. Your comments support the work of the NDP Caucus on this issue.

My NDP colleague, Judy Wasylycia-Leis, MP, actively supported these individuals when they first spoke out in concern for the health of Canadians. At a meeting of the Standing Committee on Health, Ms. Wasylycia-Leis profiled their efforts in stating, Were talking about three scientists who have been at the forefront of a movement in Canada to ensure that health protection is not just a concept on paper but is practiced in reality. They have been there every step of the way, speaking out whenever there were reasons to be concerned about the drug approval process, the process involving veterinary medicines. They were key to the whole study here, and in the Senate, on bovine growth hormone.

The treatment of these public servants has influenced our efforts to promote whistle-blowing legislation. At the time of the firings, NDP MP Pat Martin commented, "if the government has signaled the way they feel about whistle-blowing by firing these three prominent whistleblowers, it doesn't bode well for the future of meaningful legislation...this is a huge step backward. Building on Mr. Martins parliamentary work, the federal NDP Caucus will continue to push for whistle blowing legislation in this Parliament.
