Death by Sabin polio vaccine - what you wont see or hear from the corporate media

My daughter, Katie Marie James died on November 8, 1983 as a direct result of the Sabin polio vaccine, at the age of five months.

Katie was born on June 2, 1983, a beautiful, healthy baby, with a thick black hair with frosted tips! She was such a delight, my husband and I, and her two year old brother Peter loved her so much! We felt that we had the perfect family.

I breast fed, Katie, as I had her older brother Peter, and she was thriving! Our nightmare began when Katie was two months of age and I took her to our family doctor for her first vaccination, the DPT-Polio vaccine.

Katie's first reaction to the vaccine occurred a few days after her vaccination when she began to sleep more than usual. I did not recognized "excessive somnolence" as a serious adverse reaction to the vaccine since I had never been given any information by my family doctor regarding contra-indications or adverse reaction. In fact, as my daughter slept, I actually thought that she was being "a good baby."

Another observation I noticed was that Katie did not nurse as vigorously as she had prior to her immunization and over the following few weeks she failed to gain weight and began to lose weight.

About a week following her immunization, I went to get Katie up from her nap when I was shocked to observe that the left side of her body was paralysed. Her left arm was completely flaccid, her left leg somewhat so, and the left side of her face had a marked "droop." Katie also was experiencing a very high fever.

My husband and I immediately took her to emergency at Children's Hospital in Winnipeg where Katie was admitted and remained hospitalized for five days.

During that time, Katie went through a series of tests, spinal tap, many x-rays, blood work, EEG etc. Unbelievable, all tests came back negative and upon Katie's discharge from hospital, we still had no idea what happened to our little baby. How did she go from being a healthy, thriving baby to a sickly baby with a marked left sided paralysis?

Remarkably, over the next month, in some ways, Katie began to very slowly improve. I was taught how to perform active and passive exercises with her by the physiotherapists at the hospital , and religiously did the exercise three times a day. She started to smile again, her beautiful wide toothless grin, and we were so happy that she was improving and it appeared that our nightmare was going to end.

Not so. Our family doctor, told us to resume immunization for Katie when her four month shot was due. During this time, no one, not the neurologist, the paediatrician, the emergency physician or the family doctor suggested that the Sabin oral polio vaccine was the culprit. I was so naive at that time that it did not enter my head that a childhood vaccine meant to prevent illness in babies could maim or kill them.

So, of course when Katie's second DPT-Polio vaccine was due, like a good mother I brought her into the doctor's office. To this day, that has been the biggest regret of my life. I know that Katie would have survived the first assault of the polio vaccine and should never , ever received the second shot. In the product insert a "focal neurological sign", (which is exactly what the emergency physician wrote as an admitting diagnosis for Katie) following the polio vaccine is a contra-indication for continuing . I believe that if not for the second DPT_oral polio vaccine Katie would be alive today, perhaps with a residual paralysis. Who knows what she would have accomplished in her lifetime?

Two weeks following her second vaccination, Katie began to scream one night, a horrible high pitched scream. My mother happened to be visiting us from Toronto, and having birthed five children and having a lot of experience with babies stated that she had never heard a baby scream like that before. The screaming went on all night, and I could not console my baby. The next morning, I took Katie back to the family doctor, and told him about the terrible all night screaming episode of the previous night. His advice was that Katie was probably teething. My husband and I didn't agree and we told the doctor that we wanted Katie to go to Sick Kid's Hospital in Toronto. Arrangements were made that day to take Katie to Toronto in a few weeks time.

That never happened, as our darling baby died that night, the vaccine induced encephalopathy from the second Sabin oral polio vaccine was too much for her little body.

At that time, Manitoba was the only province to continue to immunize wee babies with the live viral polio vaccine, despite the fact that it was well know that the Sabin strain of the polio vaccine caused paralysis and death in recipients. Our daughter Katie's death has never officially been documented as due to the polio vaccine, despite the fact that the Sabin polio vaccine was quietly removed from the market in North America over ten years ago.

Over the years I have met with the Manitoba Medical Association, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba and the various political parties to have a mandatory reporting system of adverse reactions set up so that we know the true number of babies whose lives have been sacrificed for a "one size fits all" immunization program in this country, an immunization program that mandates that every single baby must receive every single vaccine with out taking a detailed family medical history to rule out high risk babies who should not receive any immunizations. And why if there is mandatory vaccination, on the one hand is there no mandatory reporting of vaccine reactions on the other hand?

There is something terribly wrong with the system! I am still searching for answers, an apology for my daughter's death and the truth acknowledged and documented that Katie died from the oral polio vaccine.

As her mother and her advocate, how can I do anything less? Katie's little soul cries out for justice and for the dignity of the truth.
