Whenever I get frustrated and ask myself how we've ended up in the sad
state of affairs we are in, the Universe seems to send me an answer. This
week, my answer came to me when I called Denver Post Editor Bob Ewegen to ask him for his sources for statistics and statements he made in an
editorial regarding our pending vaccine tracking/notification bill.
Upon asking him if he could supply me with some sources, he said something along these lines: "I'm not going to debate this issue with you or flouride or any other issue like that". I calmly (at first) told him that I had no
intention of debating anything with him either, I just wanted to know where
he got the statistic that serious vaccine reactions are 1 in 1 million or
that risk of "death or crippling injury" from a disease is 1 in 10. He
condescendingly asked me if I've ever heard of the CDC. I said yes, and
that actually I visit their site frequently and that I've never seen either
statistic there. I asked him if the CDC is where he got the stats. He said
something like "well no. Those were just examples". I thought to myself,
examples of what? Examples of things you pulled out of your a*@?
Then I got specific. I asked him if the CDC actually claims that risk of
death from any particular disease is 1 in 10. He said "have you heard of
smallpox?". I reminded him that we don't vaccinate for that anymore so it
wasn't really appropriate to use a statistic for that in his editorial and
that if he was indeed talking about smallpox he should have used 3 in 10
instead.
He then told me something like this "Look, you have two revolvers that you
must choose between. One has one bullet in it and the other has five. I'm
choosing the one with one bullet". Then he told me something to this
effect, "Unfortunately in this state, people have the right to choose not
to protect their children". By this point, I lost it. I started yelling at
him.
He said he didn't want my children infecting his. I asked him if he was
vaccinating his children then what was he afraid of? How is my child going
to infect his? He had no answer but just kept repeating, "Madam, you are
irrational".
I told him my daughter died from her vaccinations and he told me that
"that's something YOU believe. It's probably not true". I asked him if he's
ever heard of the VICP or VAERS. He wouldn't answer. He again told me that I am irrational.
I told him that if he couldn't give me one solid source for any of his
claims in the editorial that I would just have to inform the media and
everyone else that he apparently wrote an editorial without even one
reference and that he must have just made everything up. He told me to "go
ahead and lie my tail off, or my heart out" or something of that nature. I
told him that he's the liar and I hung up.
Thanks Universe for showing me just why we are where we are. Apparently
when you are a member of the media, you don't need sources. You can
report whatever in the hell you want and then call anyone who asks
questions irrational. And not only that, the masses will believe you and
dangerous legislation will be passed because of your lies. The day after
this editorial entitled "Owens should OK immunization bill", we were told
the Governor is going to sign the bill. I had just been at the Governor's
office to discuss the problems with the bill that week. The power these
people in the media have makes me want to vomit. I asked Mr. Ewegen if he felt he had an obligation to report the truth; complete with accurate,
identifiable sources and he simply would not answer me, he just kept
chanting, "Madam, you are irrational".
There were many other inaccuracies for which he would give me no source.
Too many to go into. But it is safe to say, there was not even one true
sentence in the whole thing, well, other than 48% of CO children are in the
vaccine registry at this time.
I've had many disturbing conversations with anti-choice people, but this
was by far the most horrifying, infuriating exchange I've ever had with
anyone. This man is downright scary and he's in a position of power. I
wrote this partly to vent and partly to remind everyone just what we are
dealing with here. We need an effective way to deal with media and I'm not
sure what that is. They seem to undo every good thing we accomplish.

Wouldn't it be fun to jam his phone line for one day? Or, if you aren't
comfortable actually getting him on the phone, call and leave him a nice
message in the evening. Imagine him coming in to work for the next week to
a full voicemail box telling him of the reality of vaccine horrors. Imagine
showing him that he made the wrong person mad and that this is what you get when you lie.
