Please, Health Canada, Don�t Protect Me!
The Canadian government has begun sending people like me back to psyche wards and mental hospitals by telling us we can no longer import a natural vitamin and mineral supplement that has kept us free of prescription psychotropic drugs for years. It�s positively medieval. My obstetrician asked me to stay out of this fight; apparently the stress of survival in Canada can bring on premature labor. Since Health Canada has shut the border down to the supplement called Empowerplus I have spent two nights in the hospital, threatening to deliver early�3 months early. But I have more to lose here than just my baby. I should be dead by now. As a third generation manic-depressive, I fully expected to die. Grandpa killed himself, so did Mom. I suffered in my illness for more than ten years and was diagnosed with rapid cycling bipolar-affective disorder 1. In 1996, I was one of the first people blessed enough to try the Truehope program of natural safe supplements. My hell ended and life began. Now seven and a half years later, Health Canada has decided to protect me. Health Canada didn�t mind when I ate Paxil, Prozac, Lithium, Haldol, Rivotril, Ativan, Epival, Cogentin, Tegretol and other dangerous drugs. They didn�t mind when I developed autoimmune disease and liver damage. They charged the taxpayers for my months in the psyche ward and weekly doctors visits. They didn�t mind when I was �mentally ill�. They only started minding when I bought my own supplements, dropped the drugs and started living. They really started paying attention when universities and physicians began publishing positive research about the supplement in medical journals. As soon as the vitamins and minerals were deemed effective, they were suddenly classified as a drug. Vitamins and minerals are drugs? I have been drug-free since 1996. I am no longer mentally ill. I have a stable home, a great husband, and a happy life. Since my recovery I have given birth to two healthy girls and I am now six months pregnant. I don�t see a psychiatrist. I haven�t for seven years. The Canadian government has legalized marijuana for therapeutic use, but insists that I must not have access to vitamins and minerals. I�ve tried going off of it before, even something like a three-day stomach flu is enough to see me have a return of major bipolar symptoms. Health Canada has ordered me back to hell with their illegitimate policies. Back to the psyche ward and back on the drugs. Back where I belong? Who is the Health Protection Branch Protecting? How is my recovery and a thousand others like mine a threat to the safety of Canadians? What gives them the right to decide what I can eat? What kind of country allows big money lobbyists to interfere in the kitchens of its citizens when such interference means sure death? I already know of other people, who, without access to the supplement, have relapsed into psychotic behavior after years of clean health. What is our government thinking?
