BiteBack: Tell US to go GM cold turkey

October 2004

Dear Friends,

In this email - an update on what happened to the citizen's objection to the WTO you signed and the current stage of the GM dispute in the WTO, plus a new Bite Back action to take - send an online turkey to the US President!

GM trade war update

In May, we branded the WTO a bio-hazard as over 106 000 citizen objections were handed in its headquarters in Geneva. About 20% of this total, over 21,000 objections, came from the UK, so we'd like to send out a special thank you to all the activists who helped us reach, and pass, our target number.

See photos and story at:

The WTO dispute panel has recently called in scientific experts to debate the safety of GM foods and crops which is a blow to the Bush Administration who fought to stop any debate over scientific safety. Friends of the Earth is watching the case closely and will be in touch with further developments and actions to help the campaign. The first of these is below.

Tell the President to go cold turkey on GM

Now that we've got the WTO's attention, it's time to make it clear to the US that we want them to withdraw this case at the WTO.

Thanksgiving on 25th November is a major US national celebration of food, family and freedom, when families gather together for a traditional meal of turkey. At this time, American children draw turkey Thanksgiving cards for their families in school. They use the outline of their hand to suggest the shape of a turkey and then decorate it with crayons, coloured paper, glitter and feathers.

We'd like to take this opportunity to send a nice, clear message to the US President (Bush if he wins the election on 2 November, whomever else wins if Bush loses) that it is not acceptable to use the WTO to force European's to eat GM food. You can help by sending your own Thanksgiving turkey card to the President in time for his Thanksgiving dinner by visiting:

www.bite-back.org.uk

We're collecting hard copy cards as well across the UK, and we'll deliver all of them just before Thanksgiving, so it would help if you could try to send your e-mail card by 22 November at the latest.

Please also forward it to your friends and relatives.

Thank you!

Best wishes,

Jane Hutchings
