The Forgotten Factor of Context
Saturday, February 7th, 1p.m.
Healing Earth Resources
3111 N. Ashland Ave., Chicago
Eight years ago there was no genetically engineered food, while today about two-thirds of the food we buy in supermarkets contains genetically engineered products. This radical shift in food production has gone largely unnoticed, not only because genetically engineered food is not labeled.
* What is driving the genetic revolution in agriculture?
* Is this food safe and being regulated?
* Why is there no mandatory labeling?
* Is genetic engineering necessary to feed the world?
Craig will illustrate through various examples the shortcomings of one-sided, biotech "solutions" to agricultural and food issues.
Craig Holdrege is the author of the book Genetics and the Manipulation of Life: The Forgotten Factor of Context, and numerous articles on genetic engineering and whole-organism biology. He is a biologist and educator, and founder and director of The Nature Institute in Ghent, New York, which is dedicated to a qualitative and contextual understanding of nature and life that fosters human responsibility.
