Stop using genetically engineered ingredients in its products
Pledge not to use genetically engineered wheat if it is brought to market, and
Live up to its promises of doing more to ensure a safe food supply.
This call will support an ongoing nationwide grassroots campaign demanding that the largest food-company in the United States stop using potentially hazardous GE ingredients in its products. Engineered foods like soy and corn are currently in 70 percent of food on US supermarket shelves but aren't adequately tested for safety or labeled, taking away our right to know what we are eating.
Your call to Kraft will also be in solidarity with the grassroots mobilization in Sacramento, Calif., where people from around the world will be saying NO to GE food and the corporate take-over of our food and environment during the US-sponsored WTO preparatory meeting.
BACKGROUND
On May 14, after many years of threats, the United States filed a World Trade Organization (WTO) challenge against Europe for their policy on GE foods. This is an attempt to force-feed European consumers genetically engineered food, despite the fact that European consumers have soundly rejected these foods because of the risks they pose to human health and the environment. This dispute is likely to be resolved by an unelected panel of WTO trade bureaucrats.
The WTO challenge of Europe's democratically created policy is just the first step. From June 20-25 in Sacramento, trade ministers from around the world will attend a U.S.-sponsored meeting designed to promote the biotech/industrial agriculture agenda globally in preparation for this fall's WTO ministerial meeting in Canc�n, Mexico.
These latest developments in the global kitchen have made our work more important than ever. Continuing to put pressure on U.S. food companies, especially Kraft, helps send a strong message to the rest of the world. We have to push back and show our government and the largest U.S. food company that we DON'T want genetically engineered ingredients in our food--acting in solidarity with the millions of farmers and activists around the globe who are saying NO to this risky technology and YES to sustainable food.
KRAFT CAMPAIGN PROGRESS
After a year of thousands of calls and letters, more than 600 demonstrations around the United States and Canada and most recently a successful action on Earth Day at Kraft's Annual Shareholder Meeting, we are making progress on this campaign and are in dialogue with the company. However, Kraft has not done the right thing for our health and the environment, and we have to keep up the pressure.
