Dear Ms. Poulin:

Thank you for your e-mail message of February 27 regarding Codex Alimentarius. I apologize for the long delay in responding to your correspondence.

Your comments and concerns regarding unrestricted access to natural health products and Codex Alimentarius are understandable. Please know that the Conservative Party of Canada supports freedom of choice for complementary treatments and natural health products. We believe that Canadians should have access to a wide range of health treatments, as well as an assurance that the products available to them are safe and effective.

As you may know, Bill C-420, sponsored by Conservative MP Colin Carrie, has passed its second reading in the House of Commons and is now before the Health Committee for review. This bill, which seeks to reclassify natural health products as food and repeal sections within the act to have food and drugs represented as treatments or cures (provided such representations are not false or misleading), will undergo a detailed review in consultation with numerous stakeholders.

As the review unfolds, we hope that the committee will take this opportunity to address the broader health and freedom issues, including Codex Alimentarius.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to write and for your patience in awaiting my reply.

Sincerely,

Hon. Stephen Harper, P.C., M.P.
Leader of the Opposition
Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada
